10/8/2013

On your new DNS host create the following records (replacing domain.ext with your domain, e.g. mysite.us)

CNAME (alias) record
mail.domain.ext to point to mail.domain.ext.netsolmail.net
smtp.domain.ext to to point to smtp.domain.ext.netsolmail.net

MX record (direct what server to deliver emails to) Priority 10
inbound.domain.ext.netsolmail.net

Hope this helps someone out!

Install Windows Server 2012 Essential Connector without domain join

10/4/2013

I ran into this issue a while ago, wanting to use the client backup feature without joining to the domain. I created a batch file to assist with this process but the steps I followed are listed below.

The bat file that has "disable" in parenthesis will undo the changes to the registry after you have finished installing the connector.
wse_workaround.zip
File Size: 0 kb
File Type: zip
Download File

Note:

If you skip joining the domain, the following areas will be impacted:

      • All features that require that you be joined to the domain will not be available, including domain credentials, Group Policy, and VPN.
      • Any third-party add-ons and applications that require that you join the domain will not be working properly.
      • Skipping domain joining in an off-premises client deployment is not supported.
      • This solution is only supported on the following Windows client versions:
        • Windows 7 Professional
        • Windows 7 Enterprise
        • Windows 7 Ultimate
        • Windows 8 Pro
        • Windows 8 Enterprise
To skip joining the domain during a client deployment

    1. On your client computer, go to Start and search for command prompt "cmd".
    2. In the search results, find cmd.exe and run as administrator.
    3. Type the following command prompt:
      reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server\ClientDeployment" /v SkipDomainJoin /t REG_DWORD /d 1
    4. Complete the steps on the Connect Computers to the Server Help topic.

Reset Aerohive AP via SSH

10/4/2013

After struggling to understand why 3 APs that were dormant to be used as cold spares weren't checking in with the client's HMOL, I finally Spoke with a Tech who guided me through the process of manually directing the APs to the correct server.
  • First download putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html)
  • You can usually find the APs in your dhcp server because the last few digits of the MAC will be after the underscore in the hostname
  • Start an ssh session to the AP via the ip (Username: admin Password: aerohive)
  • Type in “reset config”
  • Clear any previous hivemanager settings via running: no hivemanager
  • Then run: hivemanager [insert hive manager domain name as seen in address bar when you login to HMOL] primary
           *example: hivemanager hm-useast51-25.aerohive.com primary
  • Then run: show capwap client
  • verify that "hive manager primary name" lists the domain name you just typed and that the "CAPWAP server ip" resolves to an ip
  • keep running the above command until the "run state" displays "connected securely to the CAPWAP server"
  • Now we need to set the Virtual Hive Manager Name manually
  • According to the tech the "vhm" is the name of the hive manager account and the following command IS case sensitive.
*in my case the command was: capwap client vhm ClientSiteName
  • The tech said there is not an easy way to find this VHM name but I saw this name when you click "myhive" once you're logged in and in the top right it says "welcome ClientSiteName"
